Republicans Rule with Fear

Republicans seem to think they can control us with fear tactics. They also seem to believe we don’t know, or can’t understand, history. And, even though they have lost our trust, they seem hopeful that we won’t double check their promises and past decisions. Not only do they seem to think we’re uninformed and controllable, like puppets on strings, they also seem expect us to follow them– and quickly– just because they scream, “Fire!”

I refuse. Last night I left messages for all of my Congressional representatives. To find out who your representatives are and what their Washington and local phone numbers are, visit www.Congress.org.

The president is pushing for a $700 billion economic plan to be rushed through Congress, without the benefit of diligent and careful examination. They are using the economic crisis to garner votes from a scared populace. He is spewing propaganda during prime time TV hours. This is exactly how we ended up in an uncalled for war in Iraq.

Why can’t our representatives take a few extra days to review the proposals before them to ensure they know what they are voting for? It took years to get into this mess, thanks to the lax policies and unchecked greed of the same party who are trying to now convince us we should raise hundreds of billions of dollars– through treasury notes and bonds, that will likely be purchased by foreign countries– to buy up a bunch of bad money-like paper.

I say no money without a plan. I believe American should know where their tax dollars are going and how they are being used. That’s exactly what I said in my messages to my representatives. I also gave them my name and address and asked that they send me a letter detailing their thoughts and how they voted. (No worries about time, here– they, meaning their staff, will create a form letter.)

Keep this in mind: this is a hot political year and the first of three presidential debates is supposed to take place this Friday. The rush is more about politics and saving the rich than about you and me, the regular folks.

Speak up. Listen up. Act up. It is your right as an American citizen to voice your opinion to your representatives in Washington.

Some trivia: What else do we spend $700 million dollars, or more, on per year? You guessed it: the Iraqi War and foreign oil.
