To all Non-Voter Opinion Holders

Don't be lazy; vote!

Don't be lazy-- vote!

Many of my friends are deep into the habit of forwarding conservative propaganda my way. I hate it. I get tired of the vitriolic lies and, when I can’t take it anymore, disproving their myths (it takes so much time).

So, finally, I’ve begun calling them. I ask, “Why are you sending me this stuff? It’s fictional garbage.”

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Most of them don’t realize they are forwarding fiction.
  • Most of them have not visited either presidential candidates’ Web site, been to a rally– with the candidate or a surrogate, or know what the issues are.
  • Most of them are not aware of Karl Rove or his patented brand of bull shit political advertising.
  • Most of them believe what they read in the emails, even after they have been proved false.
  • Most of them told me, “I don’t have time to actually look into the issues.”

What surprised me most:

  • Several of the people admitted they are not registered voters.
  • Several of the people admitted, if they are voters, they are voting based on one issue (McCain’s military career, abortion, health care, etc.)

Here’s my message to them all:

If you refuse to take the time to study the issues or the candidates you can not tell me, with any authority, that you know what is going on in this campaign, in our government or in our world. If you are not registered to vote– first of all, wtf?!– go register; it’s easy, it’s free and you don’t even have to leave home, lazy pants.

Women and minorities: you know better. Our right to vote was hard fought for and is a prized priveledge. Use your rights or risk your rights.

And, don’t stop there– vote; either in early voting (which begins here in North Carolina on October 16) or on Election Day (November 4).

And, finally:

If you don’t know what’s going on and you are not interested enough to participate in the democratic process: keep your propaganda, smears, lies and nonsensical bull shit to yourself. No vote = no say.

On the other hand:

If you decide to educate yourself on the issues and the candidates, I would love to chat with you about your thoughts and your choice for president.

The most wonderful thing about this election:

People are involved. People are registering to vote so they can participate in our democracy. People are talking and sharing opinions. THIS is what democracy is about: sharing ideas and ruling our representative government with our votes.

Take your lazy pants off and get involved!
