Murderer on campus?

Could be.

Maybe not.

May be.

There is one less female student on campus, that is for certian.

I’ve heard rumors that authorities are close to an arrest. I hope so.

I can’t help but wonder what happened that day. Poor girl finished her finals, got a cup of joe, donated some stuff to Goodwill and, a couple hours later, was found on the edge of a river in a patch of matted brush next to her blue Saturn with her eyes wide open, dead.

What’s the point?

I will never, ever understand why people do the evil things they do.

And, I can’t help it. I can’t help but think of the night I woke with a strange man in my bedroom door about three years ago. That image is as vivid now as it was then. Some how, some way, I scared him off.

Looking back, I don’t think he was there to hurt me. I think he was there to rob me, or scare me out of town (which he did).

I still think it was the light. I flicked on the lamp on my nightstand. I believe the light scared him off.

Poor Ira was murdered in the middle of the day. Her killer was blatant and unafraid of the sun.

I can’t stop wondering if the person responsible for yanking the life from that beautiful girl is on campus. And, if they are, what they are wondering about.

I didn’t know Ira, though we both worked for the school paper. I’m not even sure I met her, but I think I did. From all accounts, everyone loved her and no one had cause to dislike her, much less kill her.

So, why? Why her? Why kill her? Why in the middle of the day? Why drive her all of the way to the YMCA in Mt. Holly? Why didn’t her light scare that evil being away?

I have no reason to think the murderer is associated with UNCC in any way. I can’t help but wonder, though, as I scan the faces on the brick walkways.

And, I can’t help but wonder why.
